Originally I had intended to signal my departure and sail off to some other corner of the interwebs, a quiet place free from the troubles that seem to pop up here. Much like a person that retreats to rural parts after staying too long in the city once you leave, you start to miss the hustle and bustle of that urban life. I guess I miss the city. Reading the comments that followed that article has given me reason to reconsider and it also brought to my attention another issue that has gone completely unattended:
Racial intolerance on Newsvine.
It's something I've never really given much thought. I'd like to think I'm a reasonable person and with a fairly diverse background, prejudice isn't something I believed was a serious problem anywhere near me. Its something I believed only plagued the deep south and other rural, untouched areas. Sure, there are little blips of it here or there, but nothing pervasive or unveiled. A user visiting my departure article made a claim that there are other members of Newsvine that are blatantly racist in the content they post and the comments they make; and I believe that person is correct.
I've started a new nation called "The Tower." It's basic intent is to cast light into these corners of Newsvine and make certain that the moderators of this site and fellow users are fully aware of what is going on. While these characters may be fringe, I can be certain that the bulk of the population here would agree that this sort of behavior is unwelcome.
The Tower will post monthly articles listing events that have transpired in the last 30 days, as they have been discovered. It will offer no editorial or opinion, simply what has happened with links to each event. The goal isn't to start flamewars or incite malcontent. All discoveries will be forwarded to site moderators for their disposition.
The fundamental goal is to stop this sort of behavior either through illumination of actions that the users themselves may be unaware is racially charged or through administrative channels for behavior that runs counter to the purpose and intent of Newsvine.
